Masterclass: Painting Pictures with Sound
Join us for a masterclass conversation delivered through two consecutive panels exploring the important role sound design plays in storytelling and world-building across Film, Games & TV and the spectrum of those involved.

The first panel will focus on the collaborative nature of sound design, what it really takes to create dynamic soundscapes and the innovative ways the craft enables powerful storytelling. Speakers include sound designers Paul Davies (You Were Never Really There, Mogul Mowgli, In Camera) and Joe Beal (Chernobyl, Hanna, I May Destroy You), hosted by Ian Haydn Smith.
The second panel will look into how audio design is key in creating atmosphere in a game, how the interactive nature of games impacts on sound and vice versa. Hosted by Adele Cutting from SoundCuts (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, The Quarry, As Dusk Falls) and featuring games sound designer Jessica Saunders (Batman Arkham Knight, Fable Heroes), with more speakers to be announced.

About the Speakers
Paul Davies
With a background in electronic music recording and composition, Paul Davies graduated from the sound department of the National Film and Television School (UK) in 1993. After graduating, Paul worked as a freelance sound recordist, sound editor and re-recording mixer on a variety of feature, broadcast, and corporate projects. In 1995 Paul joined the sound postproduction company Videosonics as a sound editor rising to become head of the sound editorial department. Whilst with Videosonics Paul continued to hone his craft on a large range of feature film and television dramas. In 2000 Paul left Videosonics to become a freelance Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer and continues to work in these roles to this day. Notable directors Paul has worked with include Stephen Frears, John Hillcoat, Lynne Ramsay, Guillermo Del Toro, Steve McQueen, Hideo Nakata, Rose Glass, Bart Layton, Anton Corbijn, Saul Dibb, Julian Jarrold, Nick Broomfield and Julien Temple amongst many others, on films such as The Queen, Kinky Boots, You Were Never Really Here, American Animals, Hunger, Mrs Henderson Presents, The American, The Proposition ,We Need To Talk About Kevin, Saint Maud
and Mogul Mowgli.
In addition to his work in sound postproduction Paul is a regular visiting tutor at the National Film and Television School in the UK The Baltic Film School in Estonia and the IFS in Cologne. Paul has also held sound design workshops at The School of Sound, BAFTA, CPH Dox Festival-Denmark and The Sound of Story in Brighton U.K. Paul is a film voting member of BAFTA and AMPAS and a past chair of AMPS the U.K.’s film and television sound craft guild. Paul has received nominations from BAFTA and The Royal Television society for his sound design work and in 2018 won a British Independent Film Award for his sound design on ‘You Were Never Really Here’.
Joe Beal
Joe Beal is a Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer and Head of Sound Editorial at Boom Post, where he leads a multi award winning sound editorial team. Over the last 10 years, Joe has amassed credits including The Imitation Game, Amazon's Hanna and Apple TV+'s Hijack and Slow Horses. In 2020, he was awarded BAFTA, Emmy and RTS awards for his work on HBO's Chernobyl miniseries. His breadth of experience across a range of production sizes and budgets gives him a unique understanding of the creative and logistical demands on sound teams across the industry. From expansive otherworldly soundscapes to authentic period designs, Joe has brought his keen sense of sonic detail to a variety of genres, always maintaining a story driven focus to his sound work. Joe is a firm believer in creative collaboration as the main driver of great sound, and of developing the power of sound design as a storytelling device from script stage through to final mix. Before joining Boom, Joe studied Sound Technology at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.
Jessica Saunders
Jessica Saunders is founder and director of Salix Games, an award winning independent game studio, creators of “Dance of Death Du Lac & Fey”. Specialising in Audio and Narrative with 15 years in industry and extensive experience as a sound designer. Her achievements for which were recognised in 2015 when she won a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit award.
Adele Cutting
Adele Cutting is a BAFTA award-winning audio professional with 20+ years experience in audio direction, designing sound, music editing, casting and directing actors and covering all things audio across games, TV, installations, mobile and VR. In 2011, Adele founded audio production company Soundcuts, winners of Develop awards for Creative Outsourcing and TIGA awards. Before Soundcuts, Adele spent 15 years at EA, working her way up the ranks from Junior Sound Designer to Senior Audio Director, working on blockbuster titles such the Harry Potter franchise (on which she wore both audio and voice director hats), plus well known cult classics Populous the Beginning and Theme Park World. Recent titles Adele has worked on include The Quarry (Audio Director), As Dusk Falls (Audio Manager), Koreaboo (Director/Producer), Far Cry: Rise of the Revolution (Director/Producer), Assassin's Creed Odyssey (UK and European Voice Direction), Immortals Fenyx Rising (UK and European Voice Direction) The Room VR (Sound Design/Speech Production), Pinky Malinky (Music Editing and coordination), Elements - a James Bond cinematic installation in the alps.(Sound Design and Music Editing) and Planet Zoo (Speech production (Casting/Direction/PostPro). Adele regularly sits on juries for various sound awards (BAFTA, MAS and the Game Audio Network Guild) and regularly talks at Universities and Game Industry events. She is a member of the GDC Advisory Board and a co-opted member of the BAFTA Games Committee.)
Ian Haydn Smith
Ian Haydn Smith is a writer, editor and curator. Publications include 'Well Documented', A Chronology of Film', 'The Short Story of Photography', 'Cult Writers' and 'New British Cinema'. He was the editor of the International Film Guide. He is currently the editor of Curzon Magazine and works with the London Film Festival, London East Asia Film Festival, Flare and DocFest. He regularly hosts Q&As and Masterclasses with practitioners across the arts and film industry.
