BAFTA Lecture: Hassan Akkad

Following a screening of his short film Matar, which tells the story of a Syrian asylum seeker living on the fringes of society, hear from BAFTA-winning filmmaker and refugee rights activist Hassan Akkad, as he shares his own experiences of fleeing conflict in Syria in 2015, and subsequent work as a filmmaker in the UK.

The first in a series of events delivered in collaboration with Counterpoints Arts, which aims to explore the importance of authentic storytelling of refugees onscreen, and the positive impact of collaboration with creatives who have lived experience of migration, in order to build narrative power and create social change.

Hassan's lecture will be followed by a moderated Q&A with Anu Henriques, development executive, BBC Film.

About the Speaker
Hassan Akkad is an award-winning filmmaker and creative director at Choose Love. He co-directed Netflix’s Convergence: Courage in a Crisis (2021) and was the associate producer of the Netflix film The Swimmers. Hassan’s short film, Matar, which he co-wrote and directed was released on WaterBear in 2023 and produced by Deadbeat Films. Hassan was part of the team that made Exodus: Our Journey to Europe which won a BAFTA for Best Factual Series in 2017.

About the Moderator
Anu Henriques is a development executive at BBC Film, having previously worked at Fable Pictures in development and production. Whilst at Fable she worked with Sarah Gavron as associate director on the BAFTA winning film Rocks (2019). She is founder and co-director of Skin Deep, an arts and culture organisation that makes space for Black creatives and creatives of colour to work towards justice through cultural production, and is a co-founder of We Are Bridge, an organisation supporting and sustaining new and emerging talent in film and TV.

Getting to the Venue

By tube

Green Park is the nearest accessible step-free station and is served by the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines. 0.3 miles to 195 Piccadilly entrance. The accessible entrance is from the park at the rear of the station.

Piccadilly Circus Station is served by the Piccadilly and Bakerloo Line Services. Leicester Square Station is served by the Piccadilly and Northern Line Services. Both stations are accessed by steps only.

By train

London Charing Cross has step-free access to all platforms. 0.7 miles to 195 Piccadilly entrance. Staff are available to assist with ramps between the platform and the train.

By bus

There are bus stops located on Regent Street/St James's Street, Piccadilly, Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Coventry Street and Haymarket. All London buses have ramp access and dedicated spaces for wheelchair users.

The Cavendish London Public Car Park – 0.1 miles to 195 Piccadilly entrance.

JustPark Car Park – 0.5 miles to 195 Piccadilly entrance.
